Solo Photography Show in Karachi Explores Seeing and Framing Stories

Tehmina Ahmed is a photographer, journalist and filmmaker. A member of the Newsline family since the magazine’s beginnings, she has helped the media organisation grow over the last decade by developing its documentary film unit. But lately she has been gaining recognition for her photography. After a successful group show in the US last year, she is holding a solo show at VM Art Gallery in Karachi. Entitled ‘Thresholds,’ the exhibition asks, “At what point does one begin to see? The frame is all around us.”
The “threshold” is an instigating point in a visual journey of an artist, the point at which the outline of the frame becomes visible, and images emerge to allow the viewer to interpret the stories within.
Tehmina’s photographs hold the viewer’s attention as she explores the theme of “Thresholds” — the interval of time just before the onset of the artist’s realisation of an image, abstracted from the surroundings.
This statement by her reflects her visual and intellectual clarity:
“The photograph reflects reality as much as it shapes it. All around us, the phenomenal world goes its own way. The shutter chooses to freeze a particular slice of that world and in doing so gives it a life of its own.
The eye goes out for a walk and the photograph, in a sense, takes itself.”
Don’t miss this unique exhibition.
